Growing Our Local Economy

We bridge the gap between investors and local businesses. The East Kootenay Columbia Community Investment Co-op (the Investment Co-op) is a new member-owned association that allows its members to invest into local businesses with the purpose of promoting economic, social, environmental and community impacts.

The Investment Co-op will provide short-term capital to businesses looking to launch or expand and assist these ventures in establishing a supportive customer base and a sustainable operation for their concept.

One excellent example of the unique ways that Community Investment Co-ops (CICs) are able to support loans to local entrepreneurs and businesses is through collaboration and pooling of resources.   Three Community Investment Co-ops (CICs) from the region – namely, the East Kootenay Columbia Community Investment Co-op, the West Kootenay Boundary Community Investment Co-op, and the Creston & District Community Investment Co-op, were approached by a growing Kootenay based business looking for capital to finance the purchase of equipment for business expansion.
Each of the CIC’s undertook their respective internal due diligence, and reached consensus to move forward to provide the requested funding.  Each CIC had different levels of available capital to invest.  All three CICs were able to come to an agreement on how to share the loan with different capital investment amounts.  As a direct result, the Kootenay based business received its loan and benefited from this CIC collaboration.
